Now in the Museum: Jezebel
Jezebel wasn’t born / with a silver spoon in her mouth… Well, who doesn’t know these lyrics? When you lived in the eighties, you’ve probably heard Sade’s words a hundred times. They were recorded on the hit album Promise, published in 1985 and were the inspiration for my image Jezebel. I had to think about this song, while I created the concept of a photo, in the context of the presentation of the international Geuzenpenning Award to the Girls Not Brides foundation. The image emphasizes the extremely young age at which children (mostly girls) have to marry, because of the economic situation of the family or ‘just’ tradition. Her tears tell the rest of the story.
This piece is exhibited in March 2018 during the Geuzenmaand / Month of Freedom in Museum Vlaardingen, The Netherlands.
